About CharCircle
CharCircle is building profitable climate infrastructure at India’s last mile. We convert agricultural residues from Karnataka and South India into durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR-grade biochar), activated carbon, bio-oil, and compressed biogas (CBG) using modular pyrolysis systems. Our multi-revenue model — carbon credits, material sales, and clean energy — turns crop waste that would otherwise be burned or left to rot into permanent carbon sequestration, soil regeneration, rural livelihoods, and economic value. CharCircle proves that scalable, high-impact climate solutions can be both environmentally powerful and commercially sustainable — right where the residues are produced.
Problem Statement
CharCircle solves the massive, interconnected crisis of agricultural crop residue mismanagement in India — especially in Karnataka and South India. Every year, India generates 500–750+ million tonnes of crop residues (from rice, wheat, sugarcane, maize, cotton, arecanut, coconut, banana, and more). A large share — often 15–25% or higher in key regions — is either openly burned in fields or left to rot. The Core Problems This Creates Air pollution and health crisis: Burning releases huge quantities of PM2.5, PM10, black carbon, CO, NOx, VOCs, PAHs, and other toxins. In Karnataka, this contributes to choking smoke in areas like Hubballi-Dharwad and other districts, worsening asthma, respiratory diseases, and long-term health risks. Climate damage: Open burning and rotting emit CO₂, methane (CH₄), and N₂O — potent greenhouse gases. It also destroys soil organic matter and nutrients instead of building carbon sinks. Lost economic value and rural poverty: Farmers get little or no income from residues. Valuable biomass that could create jobs, energy, and products is wasted. This is especially acute for fragmented smallholder systems in Karnataka and the South. Soil degradation: Repeated burning depletes nutrients (N, P, K), reduces soil health, water retention, and microbial life — hurting future yields. Missed climate opportunity: India needs scalable, durable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) to meet its net-zero 2070 goals. Residues represent one of the largest untapped biomass resources for permanent sequestration. In short: India’s agri-residue problem is simultaneously an air-quality emergency, a climate failure, a soil crisis, and a massive wasted economic opportunity — all concentrated at the rural “last mile.” How CharCircle Addresses It CharCircle turns this liability into a profitable, scalable solution through modular pyrolysis technology deployed close to the source (Karnataka/South Indian feedstock moat). It converts residues into: CDR-grade biochar — for permanent carbon removal (hundreds to thousands of years) + soil regeneration. Activated carbon, bio-oil, and CBG (compressed biogas) — commercial products and clean energy. This creates a multi-revenue model (carbon credits via Puro/Verra, material sales, energy) that makes climate infrastructure economically viable without relying on subsidies alone. It directly prevents burning, restores soil health, generates rural jobs and income, and delivers measurable CDR while aligning with policies like waste-to-wealth and SATAT.
